Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a modern treatment for patients with severe aortic stenosis.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a relatively modern heart procedure and involves the implantation of a new valve in the aortic position of the heart as a means of treating those diagnosed with aortic stenosis. Dr Bhagwandeen explains the procedure in more detail.

What is TAVI?

The procedure is performed by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team led by Dr Rohan Bhagwandeen, director of structural intervention and the cardiac catheterization laboratories at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital.

Lake Macquarie Private Hospital is the only accredited TAVI centre in the Hunter New England area and performs TAVI as a treatment option for eligible patients with severe aortic stenosis.

The hospital has been offering this innovative procedure since 2014 with outstanding clinical outcomes.

A Newcastle Heart TAVI Patient Story

Dr Rohan Bhagwandeen is interviewed by NBN News to speak about aortic stenosis and the TAVI procedure.

The John Hunter Private Hospital is currently the only hospital in regional NSW that offers the TAVI procedure as an alternative to open-heart surgery.

Watch the below video to hear about local resident and retired minister Alan Palmer’s aortic stenosis diagnosis and subsequent TAVI procedure.
